Gatherings
Who we are
Sojourn Students serves the middle and high school students of Sojourn Church - encouraging them to know and follow the Lord Jesus Christ with their whole lives by intergenerational, relational discipleship.
Where we Gather
During the spring and fall semesters we gather downstairs in the Social Hall.
When we Gather
We meet Sunday evenings 5:00 pm-7:00 pm for both middle and high school students.
What we do
We call our Sunday evening gathering Refuge. As God is our refuge, we are a refuge for one another. Sunday night is a safe space where students eat, play, sing, hear teaching from Scripture, discuss Scripture in groups, and pray for one another.
What is Sojourn Students about?
We want to help our students cultivate a faith rooted and fruitful in every part and every season of their lives, rooted in their hearts and minds, and fruitful through their hands, and feet.
A faith rooted in the heart
(Prov. 4:23; Matt. 22:37)
We want our students to have an abiding faith that grows from a basic trust in and love of Jesus Christ, a trust and love which orients and directs their daily lives at home, school, and the world.
Each semester we teach students what it means to have a trusting relationship with Jesus, and by word and example show what how their relationship with Jesus affects each part of their lives.
In the Spring and Fall, middle schoolers and high schoolers gather on Sundays after worship to read the scriptures, pray together, and fellowship over a meal, learning by practice and imitation how to follow Christ.
Because the love of Christ is more caught than taught, we strive to equip parents to practically live out their faith before their children, normalizing it in the day-to-day life of the home.
We emphasize the importance of students taking responsibility for their faith, growing to maturity in their faith, so that their faith becomes their own. A faith rooted in the mind (Rom. 2:2; Col. 2:8) — We aim to equip our students with a
confident faith, understanding the intellectual foundations of Christianity, so that they can thoughtfully and meaningfully engage the challenges of life. Each semester we read from the scriptures in small groups led by an adult volunteer, where we discuss the Bible and learn how to read and interpret the scriptures faithfully, and bring the word of God to bear on life’s big questions.
For high schoolers, we offer more in-depth training on how to read the Bible, how to guide others in reading it together, and how to facilitate small group discussions.
A faith fruitful through their hands
(Eph. 4:25-32)
We want our students to see themselves united with the whole church in the call to make disciples, building meaningful, Gospel-centered relationships with those older and those younger than themselves.
Because each believer is called to share their faith, we encourage students to serve those who are younger, teaching them and helping them to follow the Lord.
We offer high school students leadership opportunities so that they may practice sharing their faith, teaching the scripture, humbly serving other, and setting an example to which younger students can aspire.
A faith fruitful through their feet
(Heb. 11:13; Jer. 29:7)
We want our students to remember that they are sojourners and exiles on the earth, yet God has put them here with a purpose, to seek the welfare of the city where they live, and to serve the Lord wherever he leads them in life.
We offer opportunities to serve the local community.
We offer students instruction on what it looks like to cultivate their faith in the next season of life, from graduation to university, and beyond.
